It's faux stained glass. Real tumbled, colored glass is arranged inside the open sections of a wood cut-out, then sealed under clear two-part resin. Once it cures it's solid, glossy, and lights up when the sun comes through it — without any of the soldering, leading or kiln work that traditional stained glass needs.

A class with Leslie runs about 1½ hours. Working from a kit at home takes as long as you want it to — arranging the glass is the fun part and some people linger. Either way, after you pour, the piece has to sit flat and undisturbed for 24 hours to cure before you can hang it.

In the kit: 1 stained wood cut-out, 6 different crushed glass colors, 1 part A and 1 part B resin container, 1 single-sided adhesive sheet, 1 pair of gloves, and a plastic spoon and mixing cup.

You supply: a well-ventilated space and a perfectly level surface.

Kids are welcome, and arranging the glass is the part they enjoy most. An adult does need to supervise throughout, because this is crushed glass, and an adult should handle the resin mixing and pouring — gloves on, with good ventilation.

Almost always under-mixing. Parts A and B have to be measured equally and stirred for the full four minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the cup. Cold rooms slow the cure too — give it more time before you worry, and if it's still soft, let Leslie know.

Usually, yes — the wood cut-out is the design and the glass is the color, so the same shape can go warm, cool, pastel or high-contrast. Say what you have in mind.

Most pieces have holes for a hanging cord and come strung and ready. A simple suction cup hook on the window glass works well — hang it where the sun actually hits, which is the whole point.

Dust it with a soft dry cloth. If it needs more, use a barely damp cloth and dry it right away. Skip glass cleaner, alcohol and anything abrasive — those can dull or cloud a resin surface.

These are made for indoor windows. The frame is wood and the finish is resin, and neither holds up to sustained rain, sun and freezing — over time the wood swells and the resin can yellow. Hang it inside, in a window that gets good light, and it will last.

The glass itself is glass — that color doesn't fade. In an indoor window, which is where these are meant to hang, a piece holds up well.
